Introduction
Hi, my name is Prester John and I am both Metally ill, and Homeless. But don't cry for me just yet. All things considered my life isn't too bad because I live in what is probably the largest, most Progressive homeless shelter in America, the Haven for Hope in San Antonio, Texas. If your shocked that a progressive outreach program to the impoverished exists in the very bleeding heart of Texas don't worry, I was too. Because there has been interest in this topic expressed in this subject and there is a great lack of material written by people actually experiencing this. While some material is available from those whom have experienced homelessness, there are almost no first person accounts of mental illness, particularly Schizophrenia.I have decided to start this blog. I am hoping that this will spur a discussion about the interconnected problems homelessness, substance abuse, and mental illness. I am also hoping that by talking openly and honestly about my experiences and situations I will help to break down some of the social stigma's associated with mental illness and homelessness.
I have decided that I will share my story as much as possible without leaving identifying information (for either myself or fellow residents). I have quite a lot to say but I don't want the blog to be exclusively about me. That said I lack a College Education so I don't know much about Homelessness and Mental Illness beyond my own direct experience and the experiences of those around me. So the best I can do is largely anecdotes, but I hope that readers will find it nonetheless interesting. Also, I believe I am one of the first to ever speak about the particular facility I live in from the inside, as their really isn't much information available on the net beyond standard boilerplate.
First off, let me just say that absolutely some of the situations at Haven for Hope will be controversial. It is a very controversial program even within the city of San Antonio, and would be likely be loathed by the typical Texas Republican. I expect this blog itself will be controversial, as much of what I present will run counter to the dominant narratives surround Mental Illness and Homelessness. For myself I will try to remain neutral and simply relate what I have experienced as best I can.
